About Sweet Tooth
Gus is a sweet, fawn-like boy who has been raised in hiding after a mysterious pandemic reshaped the world. When his safe haven falls apart, he leaves with Tommy Jepperd, a gruff drifter who becomes his guardian and guide through a fractured America. Along the way they cross paths with scientists, hostile survivors, and other hybrid children, each encounter revealing more about the outbreak and the forces that want to control or cure the hybrids. The series mixes tender, child-centered moments with tense confrontations, as characters make difficult choices about trust, protection, and what counts as family.
Released on Netflix in 2021, Sweet Tooth is adapted from Jeff Lemire's comic and was developed for television by Jim Mickle, Kseniya Melnik, and Zaike LaPorte Airey. The cast includes Nonso Anozie, Christian Convery, Adeel Akhtar, and Stefania LaVie Owen, and the production uses a blend of practical creature effects and visual effects to bring the hybrids to life.
The series attracted attention from genre and television award circles for its creature makeup, production design, and performances, receiving nominations and recognition in several industry and fan-driven contexts without claiming major mainstream trophies.
Gus and Jepperd became memorable figures online, and the show's visuals and emotional tone sparked a steady stream of fan art, cosplay, and discussion. Its mix of fairy-tale motifs and grim post-apocalyptic imagery helped it stand out in streaming conversations, and merchandise and social posts amplified its presence among family-friendly genre fare.
Critics and audiences reacted positively, with viewers rating the show around 7.8 out of 10 based on user polls. Reviews praised the central relationship between the child and his protector, the imaginative worldbuilding, and the moral tensions between scientific curiosity and empathy. Prominent themes include belonging, innocence under threat, and how communities are rebuilt after large-scale loss.
