An FBI agent believes his missing son has fallen prey to a vicious serial killer and heads to Amarillo to track the man down. The case is officially shut because of the personal stake involved, yet the investigator keeps digging, drawing a wary reaction from the local sheriff who fears an obsession that could harm an entire town. When a new victim is found at a nearby car shop, the hunt tightens and the two authorities collide over methods.
