About The Faraway Paladin
Will is the last surviving human child living in a ruined city of the dead, raised by three undead guardians who become his surrogate family. Blood, a battle weary skeletal fighter; Mary, a serene mummified priestess; and Gus, a gruff spectral sorcerer, fill his days with stories, training, and affection. As the boy grows, he starts asking who he truly is, and the question pushes him to look beyond the pale skyline. He uncovers fragments of a forgotten past and learns about mercy, faith, and the dangers of bigotry. When he takes his first steps toward becoming the Faraway Paladin, the world opens up in ways his childhood self never imagined. The tone balances quiet moments with bursts of action.
Premiered in 2021 as an adaptation of Kanata Yanagino's light novel, the project comes from creators Kanata Yanagino and Tatsuya Takahashi. The show brings the original story to life through animation and voice acting, inviting viewers into a world where magic and memory collide.
Critics have noted a steady, character driven tone that packs emotional weight without rushing action. The series asks about identity, faith, and the ripple effects of mercy and cruelty in a world where divine forces shape a child’s path. Its art direction reinforces a somber mood while leaving room for wonder. Its pacing is deliberate yet never dull.
Fans have engaged with the trio of guardians and Will's search for belonging, creating fan art and discussions about found family in a dying world. The premise has sparked memes and thoughtful reactions about mercy, memory, and what it means to grow up under guardians who were never human.
