The Human Stain

Coleman Silk, a worldly professor with a polished reputation, loses his position after a public remark that is read as a racial slur. To salvage his standing, he teams with his friend and former student Nathan Zuckerman to write a memoir of the incident. As the manuscript takes shape, Zuckerman uncovers a hidden facet of Silk that could upend the life Silk has so carefully curated. At the same time Silk begins an affair with Faunia Farley, a younger woman whose painful past threatens to unravel the layers Silk has built around himself. The story threads ambition, secrecy, and desire, examining how identity is formed by perception, power, and the costs of keeping secrets.

Directed by Robert Benton, The Human Stain adapts Philip Roth's novel with a screenplay by Nicholas Meyer. Released in 2003, the drama features Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, and Ed Harris and carried a budget around 30 million.
