About The Legend of Korra
Set after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra follows Korra, a bold and stubborn young woman from the Southern Water Tribe who has already mastered three elements and is determined to finish her training as the Avatar. She relocates to the bustling, modern Republic City to study under Tenzin and his airbending disciples, but urban crime, political movements, and spiritual disruptions complicate her lessons. Korra’s confidence and impatience clash with the inward work required of an Avatar, and as external threats intensify she wrestles with leadership, loyalty, and the gap between what she wants and what the world needs, without resolving every conflict at once.
Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series premiered in 2012 as a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender and aired initially on Nickelodeon. Its production combined Western story design with high-quality animation and serialized storytelling that expanded the franchise’s scope.
The show earned attention from animation industry organizations and critics, picking up multiple nominations and some awards for its visual design, direction, and voice work. It was often highlighted in year-end lists and animation festival coverage, reflecting industry respect for its technical and narrative achievements.
Culturally, Korra left a big footprint. Its Republic City setting and steam-era aesthetics influenced later fantasy works, while its willingness to tackle politics, trauma, and mature relationships broadened the perception of what a children’s animated series could address. The series sparked an active fandom and continues to be referenced in conversations about representation and progressive storytelling in animation.
Critics and viewers generally rated the show highly, with a user average near 8.2 out of 10 from thousands of votes. Reviews praised the series for dynamic action, strong voice performances, and themes of identity, power, and recovery, even as some seasons and plot arcs drew more debate than others.
