About The Protectors

Set in early 1970s Britain, The Protectors follows Harry Rule and Paul Buchet as a duo who take on dangerous assignments that other agencies shy away from. Each self contained episode thrusts them into scams, conspiracies and criminal schemes where quick thinking and practical problem solving matter more than high tech gadgets. Contessa Caroline de Contini appears as a vital ally who provides access to sensitive cases, while the pair's professional partnership blends calm nerves with a willingness to bend rules when needed. Gerry Anderson moves from puppetry to live action with a contemporary tone that feels urgent and real. The program ran 52 episodes over two 25 minute seasons.

Produced by Lew Grade's ITC Entertainment, The Protectors debuted in 1972 and aired through 1973. Created by Gerry Anderson, it marked his second foray into live action outside of puppetry and the first major contemporary crime drama in his career.

Despite its shorter run it earned strong audience affection and became one of Anderson's most popular productions, helped by guest appearances from notable actors. It earned a renewal for a second season, but a planned third was halted when the sponsor pulled out.

Critics tended to praise its brisk pacing and grounded tone for a show in a half hour format. The series blends action with crime drama set in a recognizably contemporary Britain and leans into professional teamwork and practical problem solving over gadgetry.
