About The Smurfs
An eccentric sorcerer named Gargamel pursues the mischievous Smurf village across a lush magical realm until a misstep scatters the tiny blue folk into modern Manhattan. The Smurfs, barely three apples tall, find themselves lost in Central Park among curious pedestrians, trains, and city noise. With their home missing and danger close behind, Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and their friends must stay hidden while seeking help from the human world. They befriend a down to earth illustrator and his wife who become accidental guides through a city that seems overwhelming at first. As Gargamel tracks the intruders across two very different worlds, the Smurfs plot a way to reunite with their community while avoiding capture and keeping their secret safe together.
Directed by Raja Gosnell, the film reimagines the classic blue creatures for a live action with CGI world. It features the voices of Jonathan Winters and Katy Perry, and draws on The Smurfs created by Peyo for release in 2011.
With a budget of 110,000,000 dollars, the movie earned global grosses surpassing 563,749,323, a strong return that helped launch a 2013 sequel. The film performed particularly well in international markets, appealing to families worldwide that impressed audiences globally everywhere today.
Visually, the clash of a bustling New York setting with the Smurfs became a memorable image for a generation that grew up with the characters. The movie helped keep the Smurfs in the public eye through toys, clips, and new collections. It helped keep the franchise alive for new generations.
Critics described it as light family fare, with humor rooted in slapstick and visual gags rather than complex plotting. The film touches on teamwork, belonging, and adapting to new environments, while keeping the tone light enough for kids and entertaining for parents. Its simple warmth makes it easy to revisit.
