About The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
When a pirate named Burger Beard obtains the final page of a magical book that makes whatever is written in it come true, the Krabby Patty secret formula vanishes and Bikini Bottom faces real danger. SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Squidward and even Plankton set out to retrieve the page and restore their town. Their search takes them above the sea where strange rules and odd situations test their skills and patience. To recover the recipe they adopt superhero personas, learn to work in new ways, and rely on friendship, goofy instincts and quick thinking, all while the threat grows closer and bigger. Along the way they run into absurd obstacles, clever traps and unexpected allies who complicate the chase.
Released in 2015 and co-directed by Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell, the film draws on SpongeBob SquarePants material by Tom King, Erik Wiese and Luke Brookshier, and stars voice performances from Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown and Mr. Lawrence.
The movie was a strong box office performer, appealing to families and longtime fans alike and helping sustain the franchise's theatrical presence with solid ticket sales across multiple markets and encouraging tie-in products and themed promotions in many territories globally.
By mixing familiar undersea humor with surface-set antics and superhero send-ups, the film reinforced SpongeBob's place in pop culture. Moments from the movie showed up in fan art, social feeds and children's play, and the cast's comedic chemistry extended the characters' appeal beyond the original TV episodes, and late-night references.
Critical and audience responses were mixed to positive, with a user vote average of 6.1/10 from 2,472 votes. Reviewers noted its broad family humor, energetic set pieces and emphasis on friendship, teamwork and imagination, while some critics felt it relied heavily on spectacle over deeper storytelling. It remains a favorite.
