About Upload
In 2033, people nearing death can opt to be 'uploaded' into corporate-run virtual afterlives, and the show centers on one such service called Lakeview. Nora Antony scrapes by in Brooklyn while working remote customer support for Lakeview's privileged residents. After a self-driving car crash in Los Angeles leaves programmer Nathan Brown clinically dead, his wealthy girlfriend pays to move him permanently into Lakeview. Nathan wakes into a world shaped by subscriptions, optional upgrades and corporate policies that affect even basic comforts. Nora becomes his guide and occasional ally as Nathan adjusts to digital constraints, tests the system's limits and starts to question what he still wants from life, love and justice. Subtle mysteries about his accident create quiet, low-key tension.
Created by Greg Daniels for Amazon Prime Video, Upload debuted in 2020. Daniels, known for The Office and Parks and Recreation, assembled a cast led by Robbie Amell, Andy Allo and Allegra Edwards to blend sitcom timing with speculative sci-fi.
While Upload hasn't been a major awards darling, reviewers singled out performances and its tonal balance. Writers and cast earned praise for worldbuilding, and the show's steady renewals reflected platform confidence among Prime Video decision makers. Lead performances, especially Amell and Allo, drew particular praise.
Lakeview became shorthand for debates about whether tech firms should monetize our final moments, and the series sparked think pieces on privacy, consent and the gig economy's human costs. Fans shared memes, clips and essays that kept conversations alive between seasons. Many think pieces compared it to Black Mirror.
Critics responded positively to the show's mix of humor and melancholy, and viewers rated it 7.801/10 based on 1,351 votes. Key themes include corporate control over personal data, class differences in access to comfort, the ethics of simulated life and how relationships adapt when one partner lives in code.
