About Wild Wild West

Set in a sunburned, gadget filled frontier world, Wild Wild West follows a pair of misfit operatives who must stop a dangerous plot. A legless Southern inventor, Dr Arliss Loveless, schemes to rekindle civil strife by targeting the President. Two unlikely partners are drawn into the mission: James West, a fearless gunfighter, and Artemus Gordon, a master of disguise who also builds clever contraptions. Though they come from different worlds, they are forced to cooperate and swap ideas as they chase Loveless across a landscape of steam powered engines and eccentric traps. The plan unravels through bold stunts, witty banter, and energy set pieces as the duo tests loyalty, improvisation, and nerve under pressure. Their mission tests trust and nerve.

Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film adapts a classic TV idea for the big screen with a screenplay by S S Wilson, Brent Maddock and Jeffrey Price. It arrived in 1999 as a high budget action comedy from Warner Bros.

Worldwide box office reached 222,104,681 dollars, exceeding the 170 million budget and marking the film as a financial success despite mixed reviews. Its international performance helped sustain interest through the late 90s summer season worldwide.

Visually the film stood out for its flamboyant blend of Western grit, steam powered gadgets and action. The Will Smith and Kevin Kline pairing gave the project a comic energy that still surfaces in nostalgia for mash ups. The movie helped steer blockbusters toward spectacle driven by humor and tech.

Critical responses were mixed with praise for its energy and visual flair while some critics found the tone uneven. The film centers on teamwork across a cultural divide, the lure of invention, and the idea that unlikely allies can outsmart a slick villain through wit and gadgets in tense confrontations.

What Viewers Are Saying

5.3/10
from 3,498 ratings

Audiences call Wild Wild West a bonkers steampunk Western spoof that leans into goofy action more than any serious frontier tale. Will Smith and Kevin Kline click as West and Gordon, with Salma Hayek adding charm and Kenneth Branagh delivering Arliss’s gadget obsessed, over the top energy. The CGI around the leads has aged rougher and some folks feel the plot goes too far off the rails, but the train stunts and gadget antics still land for fans of this wild mashup.
