Jiří Málek, a 35-year-old sculptor caring for his five-year-old son after a divorce, tries to take his own life in his studio but is interrupted by an unexpected intruder. His housekeeper, Mr. Karas, drinks to soften the household tension, and an argument drives a wedge between them. Jiří's older brother Oldřich decides to solve the problem the practical way, drafting a detailed test to identify an ideal partner who can be wife to Jiří, mother to little Martin and a steady companion.
