Beasts of the Southern Wild

In the swamplands known as the Bathtub, a fearless six year old girl named Hushpuppy survives with her father Wink, rough around the edges but fiercely devoted. Their world is a rough mix of survival and imagination as a stormy era loosens the rules of nature. Wink's illness casts a shadow over their precarious home, and climate chaos pushes the land toward change, with melting ice and strange creatures stirring in the waters. Hushpuppy is left to cope with loss, danger, and the fragile bond to her father, while she clings to memories of a mother she cannot quite recall. Guided by her stubborn resolve and a vivid inner world, she faces the approaching upheaval with courage and curiosity.

Directed by Benh Zeitlin and co written with Lucy Alibar, Beasts of the Southern Wild premiered in 2012 at Sundance and was later distributed by Fox Searchlight. The film draws on Alibar's stage material and unfolds as a vivid indie drama.
