About Best Selling Secrets
Wong Ka-Nam vanishes to the United States, leaving behind a young son and a husband who never stops looking for her. After her husband dies in a plane accident while searching, her mother-in-law Ng Hang takes custody of the boy and raises him convinced Ka-Nam brought bad luck. Eighteen years later Ka-Nam returns to Hong Kong wanting a relationship with her son, only to meet fierce resistance from Ng Hang. The older woman is determined to keep them apart, fearing loss and scandal, while Ka-Nam quietly tries to reconnect, an effort that is unexpectedly aided when her grown son befriends her and hires her at his ad agency.
Released in 2007, the series was created by Lai Chun Tsang and Shum Lap-Keung and filmed in Hong Kong. It stars Esther Kwan Wing-Ho as Wong Ka Nam, with Vin Choi, Stephen Au, Alvina Kong and Yoyo Chen in supporting roles.
The show didn't rack up major international awards, and any local nominations are not widely recorded. Rather than trophies, the series is most often noted for its cast chemistry and steady viewership during its run.
Among Hong Kong audiences the series is remembered for its mix of family conflict and light comedy, and for keeping Esther Kwan prominent on television. Its portrayal of a fraught mother-in-law relationship and a returning parent struck a chord with viewers who follow family dramas that mix humor with daily life problems.
Reception was generally warm among viewers, reflected in an online vote average of 8.0 out of 10, though that rating represents limited input. Critics and fans tended to highlight the show's focus on forgiveness, superstition, and generational friction, and praised the actors for making emotional beats land while keeping the tone accessible and often humorous.
