Makoto Naegi is an ordinary student who wins a lottery to attend the elite Hope's Peak Academy, a school that admits only those with extraordinary talents. Once inside, the atmosphere turns sinister: students find themselves trapped with a sadistic bear named Monokuma and told the only way to leave is to kill a classmate and get away with it, or be killed. The show follows Makoto and a group of distinctive classmates as they deal with suspicion, investigate murders, and participate in high-stakes class trials. Tension mounts as alliances form and secrets surface, with the focus on surviving intellectually and morally rather than on action set pieces.

Released in 2013, the anime adapts the original visual novel, with Norimitsu Kaiho credited for series composition. The TV run features a notable voice cast, including Megumi Ogata as Makoto Naegi and Yoko Hikasa as Kyoko Kirigiri, bringing the game's personalities to the screen.
