About Drawing Closer
Seventeen-year-old Akito carries a prognosis that shadows his days, leaving him with roughly a year to live. He has grown adept at keeping the world at arm's length, choosing small comforts over big risks. Then he meets Haruna, a girl with an illness that may end her life in as little as six months. The unlikely bond that forms between them starts as shared company and silent understanding, but soon grows into a tentative romance and a pledge to live more fully. Together they face doctors appointments, hospital corridors, and the friction of hope against fear. The film follows their quiet discoveries, the jokes they trade, and the moments that feel like a rebirth even as time slips away.
Directed by Takahiro Miki with Tomoko Yoshida credited as co creator, Drawing Closer presents Ren Nagase, Natsuki Deguchi, Mayuu Yokota, Fumino Kimura and Nene Otsuka. It is based on an original screenplay rather than a pre existing source.
While still a new release, the film has sparked conversations about aging, illness, and the resilience of affection. Its understated visuals, intimate performances, and a focus on small acts of kindness have made it a talking point among couples and families. Viewers report that the film's gentle pace invites reflection and invites audiences to consider what they would value if time ran short.
Early reviews praise its restrained storytelling and sincere focus on empathy, loss and connection. The central themes revolve around finding purpose when time is limited, the courage to let someone into your life, and the way love can soften fear without erasing pain. The performances, especially the chemistry between the leads, anchor a story that avoids melodrama while still delivering meaningful emotional resonance.
Box office data has not been released, and the film is being measured more by audience responses than grosses. Its early vote average of 8.36 out of 10, based on 183 votes, signals a warm reception from viewers.
