In 1924, a lone Japanese exchange student arrives in a small, fictional European nation and ends up sharing a life with an enigmatic, prodigiously intelligent girl who rarely leaves her library except to sleep. He gradually becomes entwined in a routine where her razor-sharp logic helps unravel peculiar crimes and baffling incidents that others can't explain. The girl's older brother works as a detective and quietly depends on her analytical gifts, sending complex cases her way.
