About Green Lantern

Earth test pilot Hal Jordan is invited to join the Green Lantern Corps, a millennia-old league of space guardians who wield power rings that create solid light to do almost anything the wearer imagines. The Corps patrols the galaxies to keep interstellar order and defend innocent worlds from threat. When a cosmic danger known as Parallax surfaces and unsettles the balance, Hal realizes that his own life may hinge on embracing this legacy. He must train quickly, learn to master the incredible ring, and accept the heavy responsibility that comes with being the first human recruited into a legendary force that spans the universe, including Earth. He must earn trust among diverse aliens while facing a new enemy for Earth.

Directed by Martin Campbell, Green Lantern adapts the DC Comics property with a space opera vibe and effects heavy action. The cast features Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, with a budget around 200 million.

Worldwide, the film grossed about 219,851,172 dollars. Its return against a 200 million budget marked a modest box office performance for a big budget superhero movie in theaters, drawing mixed reactions from audiences and underperforming compared with other DC launches.

Green Lantern did not become a defining cultural touchstone, but it contributed to the push to tell cosmic stories within the DC film universe. The visuals, neon ring constructs, and Sinestro have been discussed by fans and noted in early DC cinematic direction, and influenced toy lines and fan art.

Critics were divided, praising the film's ambitious visuals while scolding its screenplay and tonal inconsistencies. The movie grapples with responsibility and the cost of power, contrasting Hal Jordans human impulses with the vast responsibilities of a space faring guardian, a cautionary note about origin stories and growth for young viewers.

What Viewers Are Saying

5.2/10
from 7,528 ratings

Audiences describe Green Lantern as bright, loud popcorn fare with a campy wink. They point to Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Blake Lively as Carol, leaning into playful chemistry while the villain turns out to be a generic fear-feeder with little bite. Some still enjoy the glossy ride and easy mood, but many see it as a misfire that never nails its tone or stakes.
