About iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia
One hundred seven years after the Moon was shattered into countless fragments, society treats that catastrophe as distant history, even though falling debris still threatens Earth. Haruka Amami shows up for what she thinks is an audition to become a pop idol, but she wakes up at a covert academy run by the Mondenkind Agency. There, a group of young women are being trained as pilots for towering machines called iDOLs, designed to intercept lunar rubble. The agency's motives are murky, and the iDOLs may be more than simple hardware, since Haruka senses unexpected feelings coming from the unit named Imber. The series follows the girls as they train, live together, and deal with loyalty, duty, and uneasy alliances, without giving away plot twists or finales.
Aired in 2007, the show was created by Jukki Hanada as a radical spin on The Idolmaster franchise, recasting idol characters into a sci-fi, mecha setting. It stands out for shifting the source material into a new genre rather than following the original game's premise.
The series didn't secure major industry awards or high-profile nominations. It has a modest track record in formal accolades, while discussion of its merits tends to live in fan communities and franchise write-ups rather than awards lists.
Xenoglossia stirred conversation by taking beloved idol characters into a darker, action-oriented world, which divided long-time fans and attracted attention for its unusual mashup. Its tonal shift prompted fan debates, alternate fan works, and ongoing commentary about how franchise properties can be reinterpreted.
Critical and fan reaction has been mixed, reflected in a modest user score of 5.6/10 from a small voting pool. Reviewers often point to the clash between cute idol origins and serious sci-fi themes, noting emphasis on adolescence, responsibility, identity, and the uneasy line between human emotion and engineered machines. The show will appeal to viewers curious about genre-bending reimaginings and character-driven mecha drama.
