About Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Fifteen years after Oda Nobunaga's fall, Japan is threatened again when Toyotomi Hideyoshi turns to the demonic Genma to tighten his hold on the land. Soki, a warrior who bears the dark but controllable power of the Oni, learns of Hideyoshi's plot and vows to destroy the cursed Genma trees fueling the invasion. He travels through ruined castles and haunted forests, gathering allies and clashing with monstrous foes while political ambition and supernatural corruption intersect. The film concentrates on action and atmosphere, laying out Soki's campaign across late sixteenth century Japan without revealing major twists.
Released in 2006, the animated horror was directed by Kôichi Kimura and created by Hiroshi Yamashita, and it adapts the PlayStation game Shin Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The DVD compiles the game's cut-scenes and was issued separately from the title.
No major awards or high-profile nominations are recorded for this DVD release. Given its nature as a cut-scene compilation and limited distribution, it didn't appear in mainstream film festival or awards coverage, though it attracted limited attention among dedicated fans.
As a straight-to-DVD item tied to a video game, it had no theatrical box office. Sales figures for the standalone DVD aren't widely published, so its commercial reach is mainly reflected in niche retail availability and fan interest and imports.
Reception is mostly from game players and anime fans who praise the voice work and moody period setting. Viewers highlight the Oni power, the Genma's corrupting influence, and themes of duty and legacy, while some comment that it offers little new footage beyond the original game cut-scenes within series fandom.
