About Over the Moon
Fei Fei is a determined girl whose mother's memory guides every step. When a spark of imagination takes hold, she builds a rocket and sets her sights on the Moon, not just for the thrill of flight but to prove a cherished legend true. Her goal is to verify the existence of a Moon Goddess, a figure she believes embodies the care and courage she felt in her mother's stories. Along the way she recruits friends and family, blends practical science with fairy tale wonder, and faces obstacles that test her faith in both magic and method. The voyage promises color, danger, and wonder as the unlikely crew learns what home really means and the courage of friends around them.
Directed by Glen Keane, Over the Moon draws on Audrey Wells and Steven A. MacLeod's storytelling and the Chinese legend of Chang'e. It blends traditional folklore with animation, creating a musical adventure that travels from domestic memories to outer space.
It did not have a traditional theatrical rollout, as Netflix released it globally in 2020. Because of the streaming debut, there is no widely reported worldwide gross to cite, making its commercial impact harder to quantify through box office alone.
Visually, the film blends East Asian design motifs with a playful Western animation sensibility, giving audiences a vibrant tour of moonlit landscapes, myth, and family bonds. It introduces Chang'e to a broad audience and invites conversations about tradition, memory, and how fantasy can reflect real world lives, and fantastical creatures.
Critics praised its warmth, inventive visuals, and heartfelt themes of grief, resilience, and belief. The story centers on honoring a lost parent while embracing new friendships, blending science curiosity with myth to suggest wonder can coexist with love and memory, turning imagination into courage for young and old alike everywhere.
