About Reideen the Brave
When the ancient Demon Empire stirs after twelve thousand years, its goal is simple and total, to claim the Earth. Hidden beneath a golden pyramid, the guardian Raideen awakens and connects to a modern boy, Akira Hibiki, who learns he descends from the lost people of Mu. Akira speeds a motorcycle up a ramp and links into Raideen's cockpit, turning into the machine's pilot as enemies attack. His school friends and Mari, the scientist's daughter, join the effort, offering support and technical help. Midway through the series the imprisoned ruler Barao is released, raising the stakes as the team balances everyday life with defending the planet.
First broadcast in 1975, Reideen the Brave was directed by Tadao Nagahama and Yoshiyuki Tomino, with story creators Masaki Tsuji and Soji Yoshikawa credited. It fits squarely in the 1970s super robot anime wave and reflects the era's TV production values and pacing.
The series didn't rack up major industry awards or high-profile festival recognition. It has been more relevant as part of a genre tradition than as an awards contender, and formal accolades for the original run are not widely recorded.
Among fans of classic mecha, Reideen left a few memorable marks, particularly the dramatic motorcycle entry into the robot's head and the image of a golden pyramid guardian. It contributed to several conventions later shows used, like youthful pilots tied to ancient civilizations, and still comes up in retrospectives on 1970s anime aesthetics and toy tie-ins.
Critical response has been mixed, reflected in modest viewer ratings. Reviewers and viewers often point to dated animation and episodic storytelling, while noting straightforward themes of heritage, duty, and friendship. The show leans on teamwork and clear good versus evil conflicts, and it appeals most to audiences who appreciate early mecha history and nostalgic genre staples.
