About SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist
Sixteen years after a national law wiped coarse language from public life, Tanukichi Okuma enrolls in the elite public morals school hoping to impress his absentist activist father and get closer to student council president Anna. Instead he runs into Ayame Kajou, a charismatic classmate who leads a secret group called SOX that stages obscene pranks to push back against strict censorship. Ayame blackmails Tanukichi into joining, using his crush on Anna to coerce him into increasingly outlandish acts aimed at exposing hypocrisy. The series plays up slapstick, romantic awkwardness, and satirical setups as the characters clash over what counts as decency and whether rebellion through lewdness can be a form of protest.
Released in 2015, the animated series was created by Masahiro Yokotani and Hirotaka Akagi and adapts Akagi's original light novel material into a TV anime format.
Critics and fans have given the show mixed but generally positive responses, reflected in a 7.0/10 vote average from 137 votes. Reviewers often highlighted its sharp satire of censorship, its reliance on sexual humor, and the chemistry among the central cast. Some viewers enjoy the anarchic comedy and social commentary, while others find the jokes too blunt for their taste.
The show stirred debate about limits on speech and the role of satire, becoming a talking point in anime communities for its audacious premise. It produced memorable visual gags and scenes that fans clipped and referenced online, contributing to lively discussions about censorship, satire, and comedic taste within fandom.
Shimoneta did not collect major industry awards or high-profile nominations, but it earned a lasting niche audience and remains frequently mentioned when people discuss provocative or politically tinged comedy in contemporary anime.
