About Sing 2
Buster Moon has built a new troupe of performers and sets his sights on staging a show in the glitzy Crystal Tower Theater in Redshore City. Lacking connections, he and his singers slip into the offices of Crystal Entertainment, run by the ruthless wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal, and pitch an audacious idea: recruit the reclusive lion rock legend Clay Calloway. The group heads off to find Clay, who has withdrawn from public life, and Buster works to convince him to take the stage again. Along the way the cast prepares a bold, cinematic production that pushes their skills and tests their loyalties, aiming to wow a skeptical industry. They balance humor, emotion, dance and big production numbers throughout and spectacle.
Sing 2 was released in 2021, directed by Garth Jennings, and serves as a sequel to Illumination's 2016 Sing. The film features a star-studded voice cast and continues the studio's emphasis on pop and classic songs framed by animated pieces.
The movie performed strongly at the box office, drawing families back to theaters as pandemic restrictions eased, and contributed to Illumination's run of commercially successful animated releases, proving the franchise still had broad audience appeal without redefining the market altogether.
Sing 2 kept the franchise visible in culture through its energetic musical set pieces and celebrity casting, introducing younger viewers to classic rock and pop songs while giving established tracks renewed streaming attention. Performances by the ensemble spawned fan covers and playlists that kept the soundtrack circulating beyond the film.
Audience ratings were favorable, reflected in a 7.835 out of 10 viewer score from 4,673 votes, and critics generally praised the animation quality, vocal performances and soundtrack, though some noted the storyline felt familiar. The film emphasizes friendship, creative ambition, teamwork and recovery from grief in a family-friendly package and heart.
