About Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun
In 1971, actress Jennifer is released from a psychiatric institution after terrifying visions interrupted her last film. Alone and disoriented in the desert, she is picked up by an eccentric group of nomads who take her into their makeshift family. As she settles in she starts seeing more disturbing images that make it harder to tell what is real. The group ignores an ominous warning about an abandoned house and moves in for shelter, treating it like another crash pad. After that night, members of the crew begin to turn up dead under mysterious circumstances tied to a local legend called the Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun, and paranoia and suspicion spiral outward from Jennifer's fragile perspective.
Released in 2005, the movie was directed by Vin Crease and features Michele Morrow as Violence Onelove, Vin Crease as Damon Grey, Cheryl Dent, Heather Justine Thomas, and Ryan Rogoff in supporting roles.
There are no widely reported box office totals for this film, which appears to have had a very limited theatrical presence. Its audience reach seems to have relied on niche genre screening circuits and home video or fan-driven sharing rather than mainstream distribution.
Though it never broke into the mainstream, the film gets occasional mentions among collectors of obscure early 2000s horror for its retro 1970s setting and exploitation flavor. Its title and lurid imagery have helped it stick in some genre roundups that focus on offbeat, difficult-to-find fright films.
Critical and viewer response has been largely negative, reflected in a low average rating of 3.25 out of 10 from a small number of votes. Viewers tend to point to rough production values, uneven pacing, and a script that blurs hallucination and reality without clear payoff. The movie does persistently circle themes of identity, distrust within intimate groups, and how past trauma can warp perception, which may appeal to fans of atmospheric, mood-driven horror despite its flaws.
