About Superb Song of the Valkyries: Symphogear
During a Zwei Wing concert, an unexpected alien menace called the Noise attacks the stage and the pop unit scrambles to fight back. Veterans Tsubasa Kazanari and Kanade Amou use their Symphogear battle armor to hold the threat off, but an innocent bystander, Hibiki Tachibana, is critically wounded amid the chaos. In a desperate act, Kanade gives up her life to save Hibiki. Two years later Hibiki has survived and is living a quieter life, while Tsubasa continues fighting on her own. When the Noise return, Hibiki is offered a chance to bond with Kanade's Symphogear and step into the fray herself, learning what it means to protect others while coping with loss and responsibility.
First aired in 2012, the series was created by Akifumi Kaneko. The main voice cast includes Aoi Yuuki as Hibiki Tachibana, Nana Mizuki as Tsubasa Kazanari, Ayahi Takagaki as Chris Yukine, Yuka Iguchi as Miku Kohinata, and Hideo Ishikawa as Genjuro Kazanari.
The show didn't win major mainstream awards, so it isn't known for trophies. Still, fans and some reviewers singled out the voice performances and musical numbers as highlights, and the cast's work has been praised within anime circles.
Its signature mix of pop music and combat sequences gave the show a distinct identity. Theme songs and sung battle scenes helped it stand out among other action anime, and those elements encouraged fan covers, cosplay, and lively discussion online, carving out a dedicated niche audience.
On review sites the series registers modest to positive scores, for example a 6.891/10 average from 23 votes on one aggregator. Viewers often praise its energy, music-first approach, and emotional stakes, while critics sometimes note repetitive plot beats and formulaic villain arcs. Major themes include sacrifice, friendship, and how music can be framed as both power and personal expression amid high-stakes action.
