About Superbook
When a curious pair of siblings, Sho and Azusa Asuka, discover a mysterious book and a wind-up robot in their scientist father's workshop, normal afternoons turn into lessons from the past. The Superbook transports them to scenes from the Old and New Testaments, where they witness key events, meet biblical figures, and return with new questions about faith and morality. The show stays focused on clear, child-friendly storytelling, using animated re-creations of scripture to introduce young viewers to biblical narratives without revealing later surprises in those stories.
Originally produced in Japan by Tatsunoko Productions in cooperation with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Superbook first aired October 1, 1981 through March 29, 1982 for 26 episodes, followed by Superbook II from April 4 to September 26, 1983, bringing the initial run to 52 episodes; CBN later produced a new revival with additional episodes.
The series did not collect major mainstream industry awards, but it found steady recognition within religious broadcasting circles and among Christian educators who used the episodes as teaching resources in ministries and children's programs.
Superbook made a recognizable mark in faith-based media by pairing anime-style animation with scripture. It spawned a companion show, The Flying House, and was localized into several languages for international broadcast. For many viewers it became a go-to animated resource for introducing Bible stories at home, in Sunday school, and on faith-oriented television blocks.
Audience reception tends to be positive within its niche, reflected in an average user score of about 7.7 out of 10 from online voters. Viewers often praise the series for its straightforward retelling of biblical events, clear moral lessons, and approachable tone for kids, while critics sometimes note its dated animation style and faith-specific framing. Overall the show serves as an educational, family-oriented presentation of scripture aimed at young audiences.
