About Survivor
Survivor drops a group of strangers into a remote, harsh setting and splits them into competing tribes. With only sparse supplies they have to secure food, shelter and fire while taking part in regular physical and strategic challenges. Wins grant rewards like comforts or an immunity idol, forcing the losing side to attend Tribal Council and vote someone out. Contestants form alliances, bargain for protection and sometimes betray each other as every elimination reshapes the balance of power. Social maneuvering matters as much as endurance and skill, and a jury made up of eliminated players later helps decide which finalist earns the title. Episodes pair intense challenges with quieter social scenes, while contestants cope with hunger, weather and sparse gear.
Premiering in 2000, Survivor was created by Charlie Parsons and adapted for U.S. audiences by Mark Burnett, with Jeff Probst serving as host. It was inspired by the format Expedition Robinson from Sweden.
Across its run Survivor drew industry recognition, attracting multiple nominations and awards in reality television categories, including honors for editing, casting and reality programming. The show and its host were frequently singled out for production quality and influence, earning attention from prize committees and television critics alike.
Survivor reshaped popular culture by putting reality competition on prime time and coining the catchphrase 'outwit, outplay, outlast'. It normalized strategies like alliances, blindsides and the merge in everyday talk, inspired parodies, academic study of group behavior, and a host of international adaptations. It spawned merchandise and long-running fan communities.
Audience and critical response has varied notably over seasons, though viewers rate it solidly, averaging 7.3/10 from user votes. The series centers on human behavior under scarcity, the ethics of strategy, social trust and endurance, often prompting debate about what counts as gameplay versus personal integrity, and recurring format tweaks.
