About The Heir to The Throne
Yau Ho-yee is the eldest granddaughter of the Yau family, lively, driven and convinced she can run the household when the time comes. Her grandfather, a traditional patriarch, has favored his only grandson as successor, so Ho-yee has long been sidelined. When the patriarch suddenly falls gravely ill and leaves behind an unexpected power of attorney, the family fractures. Ho-yee teams up with her former lawyer boyfriend, Ko Tsun, and steps into the role of acting chairman. Old rivalries flare as relatives question her authority, and the household sets up a tense contest over who will steer the family forward.
Released in 2024, The Heir to The Throne is directed by Chen Xinxia and Choi Jing-Shing, and stars Charmaine Sheh Sze-Man as Yau Ho-yee, Raymond Lam Fung as Ko Tsun, Lo Chung-Him as Yau Chi-bun, Gallen Lo Ka-Leung and Benz Hui Siu-Hung in key family roles.
As of its initial run the series hasn’t collected major awards, but early viewer feedback has been positive, reflected in an online score of 9.0 out of 10 from registered voters. Industry recognition may follow as the show gains traction.
The drama has prompted conversations about gender and inheritance in family businesses and about how tradition can clash with modern ambition. On social platforms and in regional commentary, viewers have been debating whether tradition should override merit, and how legal instruments like power of attorney can upend expectations.
Critics and viewers have noted the show’s focus on legacy, ambition, loyalty and reputation, with performances praised for their emotional clarity and tension. Themes center on family politics and the costs of pursuing leadership in a conservative framework, while the script keeps personal motives and alliances shifting, so episodes often end with new dilemmas rather than tidy resolutions.
