A librarian pulled from another era suddenly shows up in the present and can't return to his original time. When he eventually goes back to his castle, now converted into a public museum, an accident releases long-dormant magic that spreads across the continent. Strange phenomena begin cropping up in towns and cities, and the Institute that once managed those threats has to adapt. The stranded Librarian is asked to put together a new team, a group of specialists with varied skills, to track down enchanted artifacts, contain supernatural outbreaks, and repair the damage he helped cause. The story follows their field operations, the clash between old rules and modern life, and the effort to remake the Institution under unfamiliar conditions.
