About The witch
In 1817 Mani, Greece, two rival families try to end hostilities by arranging a marriage between their children. Years later the couple's newborn is found dead in the river, and the village quickly needs someone to blame. Rumor and ancient grudges settle on Theofano, a young woman accused of witchcraft, and suspicion soon spreads through the tight community. The story follows how fear, faith and honor shape reactions, how whispers become judgement, and how a single tragedy forces long-hidden tensions into the open. The series shows the widening consequences of that accusation while keeping its ultimate revelations out of view.
Created by Lefteris Charitos, Melina Tsabani and Petros Kalkovalis, The witch premiered in 2023 as a Greek-language television period drama set in Mani. The principal cast includes Maria Kitsou, Meletis Ilias, Giorgos Papageorgiou, Elena Salabasi and Youlika Skafida.
As of now the series hasn't received major international awards or notable festival recognition. Any honors have been limited and largely local, noted in smaller listings rather than on prominent awards rosters, so it hasn't broken through to mainstream prize circuits beyond Greece.
While not a mainstream international success, The witch prompted discussion on Greek social media and niche forums about how historical superstition and communal justice are portrayed. Viewers interested in regional history pointed to its Mani setting and the depiction of accusations against women, and it sparked conversations about how folklore and honor culture get represented on screen.
Public response has been lukewarm, reflected in a 4.0/10 average from four recorded votes, a sample too small to be definitive. Critical coverage is sparse. The show concentrates on themes of scapegoating, honor culture, gendered power and the persistence of tradition, favoring atmosphere and period detail over brisk plotting and broad accessibility.
