About ¡Three Amigos!

Three washed up silent film stars drift through life with big egos and bigger hats. Dusty Bottoms, Lucky Day, and Ned Nederlander travel from gig to gig, dreaming of a comeback. In a small Mexican village, a villainous bandit named El Guapo stretches his reach over the countryside, and the locals plead for help. The villagers mistake the trio for seasoned heroes, and the actors, flattered and hungry for a screen test of real danger, accept the request. The men are swept into a crude, reluctant alliance as they improvise about being gunfighters, while their bumbling bravado collides with the harsh world outside the theater. Farce collides with danger as the trio confronts a threat far beyond their last matinee.

Directed by John Landis, with ideas from Lorne Michaels Steve Martin and Randy Newman, the film blends Western spoof with light adventure. Released in 1986 by Paramount Pictures, it pairs three comic titans with a zany, self aware script that deflates the myth of movie greats while celebrating them.

Three Amigos has become a cult favorite, blending vaudeville humor with Western tropes. The trio’s chemistry and pratfalls helped fuel parodies and pop culture references, while the movie’s affectionate send up of fame and show business keeps it fresh for new audiences.

Critics greeted the film as playful and witty, though some noted a uneven balance between spoof and sentiment. The story examines performance versus reality, friendship under pressure, and how fame can distort self perception. The jokes land most when the trio lean into their characters’ stubborn loyalty and comic misfires.

What Viewers Are Saying

6.3/10
from 1,107 ratings

Fans point to Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short turning in broad goofy humor as the three mistaken heroes. The setup with El Guapo and his banditos and Patrice Martinez's love interest figure lands best in the first half when the spoof feels lighter. Others walk away thinking the jokes lean into exaggeration and the movie loses steam in spots.
