About Underworld: Blood Wars
Selene, a relentless vampire hunter, confronts threats from both a brutal Lycan clan and the treacherous Vampire faction that betrayed her. With barely a trusted ally, she leans on David and his father Thomas as they navigate a war that refuses to die. Their mission takes them through shadowed halls, rain soaked streets, and ruined fortresses as old grievances flare into new conflicts. Selene seeks an end to the perpetual struggle between Lycans and Vampires, even if the price tests her loyalties and her own resolve. The path is dangerous and personal, and the ultimate move may demand sacrifices she never imagined. Old scores flare anew and the line between ally and traitor blurs under the pressure. Hope remains fragile.
Directed by Anna Foerster, Blood Wars is the fifth film in the Underworld franchise, drawing on the world created by Len Wiseman, Kevin Grevioux, and Danny McBride. It arrived in 2016 with the 35 million dollar budget for fans worldwide.
Worldwide, Blood Wars grossed 81,093,313 dollars, placing it in the modest tier of franchise installments alongside its predecessors, while still recouping its 35 million dollar budget. The film targeted worldwide audiences with action heavy marketing across several territories and fans.
Blood Wars keeps the franchise's signature look with sleek fights and Selene's trademark leather bodysuit, a visual cue fans recognize. The movie preserves the franchise's visual language in a crowded fantasy market, contributing to its ongoing identity even if it doesn't redefine the genre for a new generation of fans.
Critics offered a mixed verdict and noted the film keeps Beckinsale centered in a lean, action focused narrative. Themes of loyalty and betrayal run through a world divided by ancient feuds, with power struggles that come at a personal cost and forcing choices that redefine loyalties across the globe today.
What Viewers Are Saying
Visually it keeps the Underworld vibe but it feels like a tired throwback, recycling Matrix era visuals without adding much new. Beckinsale still dominates as Selene in tight leather and there are a few decent action beats, but the script is weak and the pacing is rushed with gun battles that sound like noise more than impact. A lot of talk centers on franchise milking, leaning on new players like David, Semira and Marius while the story barely evolves, so most viewers end up sticking around for Beckinsale and the leather.
