About We Were Liars
Seventeen-year-old Cadence comes back to Beechwood, the family island off Martha's Vineyard, a year after an accident erased much of her memory. The Sinclair clan is gathered for their usual summer, but the event that changed Cadence is wrapped in silence, with her old friends, known as the Liars, and her first love, Gat, unwilling to give straight answers. As she puts together fragments from photographs, conversations and private moments, old loyalties and buried tensions resurface, and she slowly pieces together what happened without spoiling the outcome.
Released in 2025, the series was created by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie and adapts E. Lockhart's novel for television, with Emily Alyn Lind headlining alongside Shubham Maheshwari, Joseph Zada, Esther-Rose McGregor and David Morse.
Critics and viewers gave it generally positive marks, reflected in a 7.261/10 average from 136 votes, with particular praise for Lind's performance and the show's mood. Major themes include memory and trauma, the cost of family privilege, secrecy within generations, and the struggle to reclaim identity after loss.
The show generated lively online discussion around its unreliable narrator structure and the summer-house setting, inspiring theory threads, fan art, and renewed attention to the source novel. Certain scenes and images quickly became shareable touchpoints, and social media played a big role in driving word of mouth.
As of its initial run the series did not collect major industry awards, though reviewers frequently mentioned its performances and adaptation choices in year-end commentary. It attracted a dedicated fanbase that organized watch parties and contributed to the show's visibility, helping it find an audience beyond viewers familiar with the book.
