About World's End Harem
A mutated virus has wiped out almost all men, and Reito Mizuhara reawakens after five years in cryosleep to a society rebuilt around reproduction. He learns that a tiny handful of males are being kept in luxury and encouraged to sire a new generation, while the rest of the world copes with loss, fear, and changing power structures. Reito's personal goal is simple and stubborn, he wants to track down Erisa, the woman he loved who vanished years earlier. As he moves through a world obsessed with fertility, he faces tempting offers, moral pressure, and a mystery about what happened to the people he cared about, all without revealing major plot twists.
Released in 2022, the TV adaptation draws on the original work by Kotaro Shono and Tatsuya Takahashi. The series features an ensemble voice cast including Keiko Watanabe, Taichi Ichikawa, Haruka Shiraishi, You Taichi, and Aya Yamane.
The show has not been a major presence on awards circuits, with no reported wins or high-profile nominations in mainstream industry ceremonies. It has, however, attracted attention within anime discussion circles.
World's End Harem became a lightning rod for debate because of its premise and explicit material. It generated vigorous discussion on social media and streaming communities about portrayal of gender, consent, and reproductive politics. Cosplay and fan art circulated widely, and the series often appears in conversations about controversial or provocative anime of its era.
Critical and fan responses have been mixed, reflected in a user score around 7.5 out of 10 from 250 votes. Viewers often praise the production values and the central mystery that drives the plot, while many critics and fans point out tonal inconsistencies and uncomfortable handling of sexual themes. The series repeatedly brings up questions about ethics under extreme conditions, personal loyalty versus societal duty, loneliness, and how power imbalances shape human relationships in a post-catastrophe setting.
