About A Wrinkle in Time
Meg Murry, a science-minded girl, feels out of place after her father, a scientist, vanishes while researching a phenomenon. On a stormy night, three unusual beings arrive, each cloaked in color and offering guidance. They explain that the universe hides inside strangers and that time and space can bend to reach missing people. Together with Meg’s younger brother Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin, they set off across the cosmos, visiting strange planets where dangers and kind allies lurk. The trio of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which guide them through glowing tunnels and surreal landscapes, testing courage, trust, and the power of love in a world of darkness. They must learn to rely on others to find him.
Directed by Ava DuVernay, this 2018 adaptation brings Madeleine L Engle's novel to the screen for Disney. Storm Reid stars as Meg Murry, with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling portraying the Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Which and Mrs Who.
The film grossed about $132.7 million worldwide on a budget of $103 million, making a modest return for a large scale family fantasy. It performed best in overseas markets where imaginative visuals and familiar faces drew younger viewers and families.
Its release marked a notable step for family sci Fi with a diverse, female led cast headlined by Storm Reid and a high profile trio of Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which. The film sparked classroom conversations about science and family. Teachers praised its message and visuals in classrooms.
Critics noted the film's visuals and strong performances but some found its pacing uneven and the adaptation strayed from the source material. Core themes emphasize familial love, personal growth, and choosing light over fear. The film invites families to discuss science, wonder, and resilience together. It invites ongoing family discussions.
What Viewers Are Saying
People say it starts off strong with Meg's backstory and some eye catching visuals, and Storm Reid gives a solid performance as Meg. Yet the story veers into a CGI heavy quest that feels divorced from the source material, and the pacing drops off enough to dull the momentum. There are pretty moments with the witches and the interstellar travel, but the overall pacing and tonal shifts leave many viewers unsatisfied.
