About Pacific Rim: Uprising

A decade after the Breach was sealed, the oceans have quieted but danger hasn't disappeared. Jake Pentecost, a brash former pilot with a complicated past, is pulled back into service when a fresh Kaiju threat resurfaces. The Pan Pacific Defense Corps has rebuilt and upgraded its Jaeger fleet, and they're recruiting new talent to pair with seasoned pilots. As old rivalries and new friendships form, the team must relearn how to trust one another, sync inside colossal war machines, and face escalating threats that push both machine and human limits. The story keeps the focus on action and teamwork while tracking how a younger generation responds to the legacy they inherit.

Released in 2018, the film was directed by Steven S. DeKnight, with a screenplay by T.S. Nowlin, DeKnight and Emily Carmichael, continuing the Pacific Rim franchise and starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny and Rinko Kikuchi.

The movie drew solid international interest and produced respectable commercial returns, doing particularly well with overseas audiences while posting more modest results domestically.

Critical response was mixed to positive, with praise for its kinetic set pieces and the energy of the younger cast, and critique aimed at a lighter plot and tonal shifts from the original. Major themes include legacy, teamwork across generations, and the balance between human instinct and technological power.

Visually, the film reinforced the franchise's signature look: massive Jaegers, frantic city-scale fights and the "drift" concept that pairs pilots mentally. Those design elements kept it popular with toy makers, fan artists and convention cosplay communities, and helped cement the franchise as a go-to example of modern giant-robot cinema.

What Viewers Are Saying

6.1/10
from 5,220 ratings

Viewers appreciate the impressive special effects and nonstop action in Pacific Rim: Uprising, often highlighting John Boyega's more engaging lead performance compared to the original. Some enjoy the film's spectacle despite its ludicrous story and familiar plot elements, while others find it repetitive and feel it doesn't quite come together as a whole. Scott Eastwood's presence is noted but generally seen as less compelling, and opinions vary on the overall appeal compared to the first installment.
