About Digimon Data Squad
Masaru Daimon is a hot-tempered second year junior high student who prefers fighting to talking, and he's built a reputation for never losing in a brawl. His life shifts when he encounters Agumon, a Digital Monster who has escaped from DATS, a secret government agency that handles Digital World incidents. Their first meetings are violent and awkward, but repeated clashes turn into a rough friendship based on mutual respect and action. Recruited alongside other partners, Masaru and Agumon help investigate a string of incidents where the Digital World and the human world collide, uncovering clues about who or what is stirring trouble while each mission tests loyalties and grows the team dynamic.
Released in 2006, Digimon Data Squad was created by Akiyoshi Hongo and Ryota Yamaguchi for television, with Japanese voice actors including Soichiro Hoshi, Taiki Matsuno, Hirofumi Nojima, Kazuya Nakai, and Yui Aragaki bringing the main roles to life.
The series didn't win major mainstream awards, but it maintains steady recognition among franchise fans and anime viewers, often showing up in community polls and retrospectives that appreciate its distinct tone within the Digimon lineup.
Culturally, Data Squad is known for shifting the franchise toward a slightly darker, more action-oriented style and for spotlighting a formal organization, DATS, as a central element. That shift affected later merchandise and tie-ins, and it influenced how some international releases presented character relationships and conflict, making it a memorable entry for long-term followers.
Reception among critics and viewers was generally positive, reflected in a 7.8/10 user vote average. Reviewers and fans cite its stronger focus on duty, the ethics of controlling digital beings, and the balance between explosive battles and character moments, with recurring themes of trust, responsibility, and how far people should go to protect both worlds.
