About Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters
Years after Godzilla decimated Earth, a small band of refugees leaves a planet scarred by giant monster attacks and sets out to reclaim their home. The voyage is long and perilous, pushing the survivors to the edge as resources dwindle and trust frays. A young pilot named Haruo Sakaki leads the desperate exodus aboard a ship that travels across the stars to a distant world believed to still contain the ruins of Earth. Along the way, a controversial plan to reclaim the planet tests loyalties and exposes the clash between vengeance and survival. The film focuses on ambition, sacrifice, and the cost of reclaiming what was lost. The conflict centers on a young leader who dreams of a safer future.
Directed by Hiroyuki Seshita and Kobun Shizuno, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is an animated entry drawn from an original concept by Gen Urobuchi and colleagues. It opens the Planet of the Monsters trilogy released in 2017.
Reception to this opener was mixed, with a 6.4 out of 10 rating from 539 votes. Critics highlighted the striking anime visuals and the ambitious premise, while some find the pacing uneven. Its themes include vengeance, survival, and the heavy cost of homecoming.
What Viewers Are Saying
Audience take is mixed: the animation and Godzilla moments look striking, but the pacing is bogged down with heavy exposition for most of the run time. A lot view it as a long setup for later installments, with characters underdeveloped and a story that stalls until the late action. Some praise the boss fights and the monster showpieces, while others complain about the creaky CG in spots and a sense the film never earns its big moments. Most feel it shows potential but doesn't deliver the payoff, leaving fans hoping the sequels fix the issues.
